About the Ferrybridge Community Pontoon

The Ferrybridge Community Pontoon is a community-led project to create a safe, accessible and multi-purpose access point to the River Maigue at Ferrybridge, Co. Limerick. The proposed floating pontoon and gangway will support recreation, traditional boating, community activities and search and rescue operations.

Why the Pontoon is Needed

The River Maigue is an important part of life and heritage in Ferrybridge, but accessing the water safely can be challenging. The river has a severe tidal range of approximately seven metres, along with steep mudbanks that make entering and leaving the water difficult.

The proposed floating pontoon and gangway will provide a safer and more secure access point to the river for the local community, recreational users and organisations operating on the water.

This improved access will also provide important support infrastructure for search and rescue teams operating on the River Maigue and wider Shannon Estuary, helping crews safely access the water, manage transfers and coordinate operations.

The Proposal

The River Maigue Proposed Pontoon

The project will create a floating pontoon and access gangway at Ferrybridge, providing a safe and accessible connection between the riverbank and the River Maigue.

who we are

Community-Led
From The
Beginning

Ferrybridge Community Development CLG was established to progress the development of the pontoon as a shared, multi-purpose public asset for the wider community.

The organisation is volunteer and community-led, building on years of local involvement in preserving the area's heritage and connection with the River Maigue.

The project developed from the work of local volunteers and the River Maigue Rowing Club, whose members have worked to preserve the area's traditional maritime heritage and Gandelow boating tradition.
